Aphrodite's Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

Aphrodite's Rock — known in Greek as Petra tou Romiou — sits roughly 12 km west of Pissouri on the B6 toward Paphos, about a 15-minute drive. Mythology holds that Aphrodite, goddess of love, rose from the sea foam here. A Byzantine legend adds that the hero Digenis Akritas hurled the limestone sea stacks from the clifftop. The B6 at this point was closed between 2019 and 2025 for major landslip stabilisation works; the road is now fully reopened and resurfaced.

Two Parking Areas — Know the Difference

There are two distinct stopping points on the B6. The first, about 500 m before the main site, is an elevated cliffside layby that serves as a viewpoint only — there is no beach access here, but it gives the best angle for sunset photography. Continue further along the B6 to reach the main car park, which sits beside a pavilion café, souvenir shop, toilets and paid showers (approximately €0.50). This is where you park to visit the beach.

Always use the pedestrian underpass beneath the B6 to reach the beach — never cross the road on foot. This stretch of highway has blind corners and fast-moving traffic in both directions.

The Beach and the Legend

The beach consists of large, multi-coloured pebbles, so sturdy footwear is essential. Local tradition claims that swimming three times around the rock grants eternal youth and love. However, the currents here are notably strong and the seabed drops away quickly; only confident swimmers should attempt it. Plan your hire dates to take in several sites in one trip, and compare car hire deals before you book.

  • Distance from Pissouri: approximately 12 km west on the B6, 15 minutes' drive
  • Park at the main pavilion car park, not the elevated viewpoint layby, if you want beach access
  • Use the pedestrian underpass — do not cross the B6 on foot at road level
  • Wear sturdy shoes; the beach is large pebbles, not sand
  • Currents are strong and the water deepens fast — only confident swimmers should circle the rock
  • Sunset photography is best from the elevated viewpoint layby, arriving 30–40 minutes before sunset
  • The B6 was closed 2019–2025 for landslip works and is now fully resurfaced

Ancient Kourion (Curium)

Ancient Kourion, also called Curium, lies approximately 18 km east of Pissouri on the B6 through Episkopi. The site occupies a clifftop around 100 metres above Episkopi Bay, commanding wide views across the Mediterranean. To reach it, turn onto the access hill — midway up you will find the ticket booth, where you pay €4.50 per adult through your car window before continuing to the free summit car park. Allow at least two hours for the site; bring water and a hat, as the plateau is exposed and there is little shade.

Key Highlights at the Site

  • Greco-Roman theatre: restored and still used for summer performances and concerts, with seating for around 3,500 people
  • House of Eustolios: a Roman villa converted into an early-Christian centre, featuring a bath suite and remarkable mosaics that blend pagan and Christian imagery
  • House of the Gladiators: well-preserved mosaic floors depicting gladiatorial combat scenes
  • Clifftop panoramas across Episkopi Bay and west toward the Akrotiri peninsula

A Department of Antiquities multi-site card (€8.50 for one day, €17 for three days, €25 for seven days) covers Kourion, the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates and other state sites — good value if you are visiting multiple ruins. If you are renting a car in Cyprus for a week or more, the seven-day card pays for itself quickly.

Kourion Stadium & Beach

About 1.5 km west of the main Kourion gate, the ancient Kourion Stadium has its own free car park and no entry fee — a short detour worth making before or after the main site. Below the plateau, Kourion Beach is reached via a separate access road descending from the B6. The beach is dark sand and shingle with free car parks and several beachfront tavernas including Chris Blue Beach, where sunbeds hire at around €2.50 each. The site is popular with windsurfers and kite-boarders; note that the eastern end is frequently red-flagged for undertow, so check conditions before swimming. For more beaches reachable by car, see more beaches you can drive to.

  • Kourion Stadium: free entry, free car park, 1.5 km west of the main gate
  • Kourion Beach: separate access road, dark sand and shingle, free parking
  • Beachfront tavernas available; sunbeds approximately €2.50
  • Popular windsurfing and kite-boarding location
  • Eastern end often red-flagged for undertow — check the flag before entering the water

Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates

The Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates sits roughly 3 km west of Kourion's main gate — making it the closest of the three archaeological sites to Pissouri and a natural last stop on the return drive. Dedicated to Apollo in his role as god of the woodlands, this was one of the most significant religious centres in ancient Cyprus, active from around the 8th century BC through to the 4th century AD. Entry is €2.50, there is a free car park at the gate, and a thorough visit takes about 45 minutes.

The partially reconstructed columns of the Roman temple are the centrepiece of the sanctuary. The site is less visited than Kourion itself, which means shorter queues and a quieter atmosphere — a worthwhile contrast after the main site.

  • Location: approximately 3 km west of Kourion, on the B6 toward Pissouri
  • Entry: €2.50 per adult; free car park at the gate
  • Allow around 45 minutes for the visit
  • Operating dates: generally same seasonal hours as Kourion
  • Highlight: partially reconstructed Roman temple columns

Kolossi Castle & Commandaria

Kolossi Castle lies roughly 30 minutes east of Pissouri, about 14 km west of Limassol. The three-storey Crusader keep was first built in 1210 by the Knights Hospitaller and substantially rebuilt in 1454. It became the headquarters for production of Commandaria, a sweet amber dessert wine often described as the oldest named wine still in continuous production. A 14th-century sugar mill stands just beside the castle, reflecting the area's medieval agricultural importance. Entry is €2.50 and there is a free car park at the entrance.

  • Distance from Pissouri: approximately 30 minutes east, 14 km west of Limassol
  • Built: originally 1210 by the Knights Hospitaller; rebuilt 1454
  • Entry: €2.50; free car park at the entrance
  • Commandaria wine: produced here since the medieval period, widely considered the oldest named wine still made
  • 14th-century sugar mill adjacent to the castle — worth a look before leaving
  • Can be combined with a visit to Kourion and Apollo Hylates in the same day

Driving Through the Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area

The B6 between Pissouri and Kourion passes through Episkopi, which falls inside the British Akrotiri and Dhekelia Sovereign Base Area (SBA). For tourists driving through, there are no checkpoints and no passport controls — the road is a normal public carriageway. However, the SBA Police operate speed enforcement with radar, particularly on the winding descent through Happy Valley, and apply near-zero tolerance on speeding. Any speed-camera fine incurred here will be forwarded directly to your hire company and charged to the card you used at collection. Review the Cyprus speed-camera rules before setting out so you understand exactly where cameras operate and what the limits are.

Speed limits on the B6 through the Sovereign Base Area are posted in km/h, the same as the rest of Cyprus, but enforcement is notably strict on the winding Happy Valley descent. Keep an eye on your speedometer — a radar or camera fine here is forwarded to your hire company and charged to your card weeks later.

If you are travelling east toward Limassol after visiting Kourion, the B6 continues through the SBA before rejoining the Republic of Cyprus network. The airport transfers Pissouri page notes that transfer drivers also use this route, which gives a sense of normal traffic patterns on the road.
